On Saturday, March 4th, 2023, TEMI Foundation, in collaboration with Green Janitor, embarked on a transformative mission to clean up Adogbo, Makoko. This initiative was not just about tidying the environment—it was about empowering the community to take charge of their surroundings and embrace sustainable practices.

A Morning of Purposeful Action

By 8:30 AM, our dedicated volunteers and the vibrant youths of Makoko gathered for introductions and a brief sensitization session. We shared insights on proper waste disposal and the importance of recycling before diving into the main task at hand.

At 9:00 AM, we split into smaller teams and began cleaning the area, ensuring that we also engaged with community members along the way. The goal was not just to clean but to educate and inspire lasting change.

Community Engagement and Sustainable Impact

By 11:45 AM, after hours of dedicated work, we regrouped for a meaningful discussion with the youth leader and other community members. We encouraged them to establish a weekly clean-up routine and emphasized the importance of maintaining a hygienic environment.

To support their efforts, TEMI Foundation provided cleaning tools such as rakes and hoes, ensuring that the community had the necessary resources to sustain this initiative.

A Step Towards Global Goals

Through this initiative, we contributed towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
🌍 SDG 14 – Life Below Water: By reducing waste in Makoko, we help prevent pollution in the surrounding water bodies.
🤝 SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Collaborating with Green Janitor and the local community demonstrated the power of collective action.

As we wrapped up the day with a group photograph, it was clear that this was more than just a one-time event—it was the beginning of a movement. We are committed to continuing our efforts in environmental sustainability and look forward to working with more communities to promote cleaner, healthier spaces.
