In today’s digital world, tech skills are no longer optional—they are essential. Yet, many young people, especially girls, remain underrepresented in STEM fields. To address this gap, TEMI Foundation for Women and Youth Development launched the Empowering Youth in Tech Skills Initiative, a hands-on summer training program designed to equip students with essential digital skills and inspire them to become future tech leaders.
Held at Lagos Progressive Senior High School, Surulere, and supported by Education District IV, Lagos, the program took place from August 12–23, 2024, providing a transformative learning experience for young people in underserved communities.
A Mission to Close the Gender Gap in Tech 🚀
According to UNESCO, less than 30% of women globally work in tech fields. This initiative prioritized girls (60% of participants), ensuring they had access to the resources, mentorship, and skills needed to thrive in the digital space.
By nurturing tech-savvy youth, the program not only enhanced career prospects but also contributed to economic empowerment and innovation within their communities.
A Two-Phase Approach to Learning 🎓💡
The training was structured into two key phases:
PHASE 1: FOUNDATIONAL TECH WORKSHOP (3 Days)
Students explored a wide range of tech disciplines, including:
✅ Creative Writing ✍️
✅ Basic Web Development 🌐
✅ Graphic Design 🎨
✅ Videography & Photography 📸
✅ Project Management & Interactive Coding 💻
✅ Guest Speaker & Mentorship Sessions 🎙️
Initially, only 10 students were to advance to the next phase. However, due to their outstanding performance, all 25 participants progressed to the next stage!
PHASE 2: ADVANCED TECH TRAINING (1 Week)
Students specialized in their chosen areas, receiving in-depth training from industry experts:
🔹 Web Development – Frameworks like React, Angular, Vue
🔹 Graphic Design – Tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
🔹 Creative Writing & Email Marketing – Storytelling & campaign strategies
🔹 Videography & Photography – Advanced visual content creation
The program concluded with a certificate award ceremony on August 23rd, recognizing participants’ dedication and achievements.

The short-term success of the program saw 24 young people equipped with digital skills, while the long-term vision aims to build a thriving community of tech-driven youth.
