On April 10th, 2023, TEMI Foundation for Youth and Women Development hosted an insightful workshop on The Contemporary Dimensions of Migration Routes for Young People in Nigeria. Held at the Chapel Building, Baptist Building, Obafemi Awolowo Way, Oke-Bola, Ibadan, the event provided a platform for young people to understand the realities of migration, the risks involved, and the legal pathways available for those seeking opportunities abroad.

Opening Session: Setting the Tone

The program kicked off at 10 AM with an opening prayer led by the President of Ibadan Baptist Youth Fellowship. This was followed by a welcome address from Mrs. Adekemi Adeyeye, Executive Director of TEMI Foundation, delivered on her behalf by Guest Facilitator, Pastor Abdurrahman Orosanya. He urged participants to engage actively in the discussions, emphasizing that informed decisions about migration could shape their future positively.

Dr. S. Olawuyi James, Director of Youth and Student Ministries at the Nigerian Baptist Convention, represented by Revd. Ibukunoluwa Joshua (National Youth Coordinator), reinforced the importance of young people being purpose-driven and having a clear vision for their lives. He noted that migration is a significant issue affecting Nigerian youth and stressed the need for careful planning and awareness.

Documentary Screening: The Harsh Realities of Migration

The first major activity was the screening of three documentaries, depicting the challenges, risks, and motivations behind irregular migration. Participants were divided into two groups to analyze the documentaries, highlight key takeaways, and discuss potential solutions. The thought-provoking films sparked intense discussions, with many young people reflecting on their personal migration aspirations.

Understanding Migration: Regular vs. Irregular Pathways

The first keynote presentation was delivered by Pastor Abdurrahman Orosanya, titled “Understanding the Dimensions of Contemporary Migration (Regular and Irregular).” He outlined the push factors driving young Nigerians to leave the country, including economic hardship, unemployment, and insecurity.

In his interactive and engaging session, he challenged the youth to focus on personal development, skill-building, and nation-building rather than fleeing at all costs. He also highlighted that less than 30% of those leaving Nigeria for studies intend to return, urging participants to explore legal migration pathways and understand the necessary processes before making any move.

Exploring Migration Routes: Education, Business & Tourism

Next, Mr. Yomi Okeleye, Director of Goldenmark Consults, took participants through the different migration routes available for young Nigerians. He outlined the most common pathways, including:

✅ Education – The safest and most structured route, especially for postgraduate studies. He detailed the necessary exams and documentation required for study abroad.
✅ Business – Opportunities for entrepreneurs and investors to expand globally.
✅ Tourism – Traveling for short-term visits while exploring potential opportunities.

His session provided practical steps and guidance, equipping attendees with the knowledge to navigate the migration process legally and successfully.

Legal Frameworks for Safe and Secure Migration

The final presentation was led by Barrister (Mrs) Mosunmola, a legal expert, who educated participants on the legal frameworks that govern migration. She introduced them to:

📌 The Global Platform for Migration
📌 The National Migration Policy (NMP)
📌 The Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act
📌 Guidelines from the International Organization for Migration (IOM)

She emphasized the importance of legal awareness and the need for young Nigerians to understand their rights, responsibilities, and the risks of illegal migration.

Key Takeaways and Participant Feedback

The workshop concluded with an interactive session, where participants shared their thoughts, questions, and reflections. Many expressed a strong interest in legal migration routes, while others voiced concerns about Nigeria’s socioeconomic situation and weak legal protections for young people.

Despite these concerns, the event provided clarity, alternatives, and encouragement for youth considering migration, ensuring they have the right information to make informed decisions.

Looking Ahead

At TEMI Foundation, we remain committed to empowering young people with knowledge and resources to help them make the best choices for their future. We appreciate all our speakers, facilitators, and participants who contributed to making this event a success!
